The Captain America custom 5950 is a collaboration effort between Team Collective and Pierre Morin (@cap.tain_america). Pierre has taken the time to explain the process and inspiration behind his design, and we hope everyone enjoys their caps as much as we enjoyed working on them! On behalf of Pierre and Team Collective, a donation of 5.00 per cap will be made to Black Lives Matter.
Juneteenth of 2020 was a large learning experience for me personally. For those that don’t know ‘Juneteenth’ (June 19th) is a holiday honoring the emancipation of the slaves in the US in 1865. What’s most troubling is that is relatively inconsistent in it’s celebration in the United States. The elements of the holiday, how it’s celebrated and the continued racial inequality in the United States fueled my desire to support the Black Lives Matter movement within the hat community.

The design takes an iconic American icon, Captain America and alters the color ways to align with Juneteenth and it’s meaning. First, I utilized black to symbolize the black people that my country has oppressed for 100’s of years. Second, I colored parts of the shield with silver to symbolize the chains that bound these human beings. And lastly, I added red to the shield and undervisor to symbolize the blood of those slaves. A stark reality of racism in America, both then and now.

Rather than hide this horrific part of history and my country’s struggles in treating all people as equals, I wanted to put it on full display. Recognition of those fellow human beings we oppressed and continue to impact with conscious and unconscious racism.
